What's Changing for 2027

Each year at this time, we share information about employee health plan premiums, changes to plan coverage, and new benefit programs for the coming year. As many of you know, health care costs continue to rise substantially. This trend is not unique to MIT; employers nationwide are experiencing some of the largest increases in health plan premiums in recent years, creating significant cost pressures.

For 2027, MIT employee health plan premiums will increase by an average of 11%, driven primarily by rising prescription drug costs, including specialty medications; the increasing prevalence and cost of treating serious and chronic health conditions; and higher health care labor costs.

We recognize that increases in health plan premiums have a direct impact on employees and their families, particularly as many households work to manage rising day-to-day living expenses. MIT will continue to take steps to keep increases as low as possible while maintaining robust, high-quality coverage.

Prescription drug plan

In 2027, MIT will narrow its GLP-1 coverage for employees who take these medications (injectable only) for weight loss. We are also introducing a a free prescription savings benefit that will help you find lower-cost options for your prescriptions, as well as updating prior authorization (PA) protocols.

Health Plans

Please review the important information below about plan changes you will see in 2027.

BCBS PPO+ Health Plan

  • Annual in-network deductibles will change from $175 to $250 (individual) and $350 to $500 (family)
  • Out-of-pocket maximums will change from $2,875 to $3,000 (individual) and $5,750 to $6,000 (family)

BCBS High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)

  • Annual deductibles will change from $1,700 to $1,775 (individual) and $3,400 to $3,550 (family). These are IRS-mandated changes.
  • Out-of-pocket maximums will change from $3,500 to $3,550 (individual) and $7,000 to $7,100 (family)

Out-of-network reimbursement rate

The out-of-network reimbursement rate is the maximum amount the plan will pay for services received from healthcare providers or medical facilities that do not have a contract with BCBS. The reimbursement rate for both health plans will be reduced to 150% of Medicare from 300% of Medicare. This may result in additional charges to you for out-of-network services.

New GLP-1 coverage requirements

MIT will narrow its GLP-1 coverage for employees who take these medications (injectable only) for weight loss. To qualify for continued coverage:

  • Employees will be required to have either a body mass index (BMI) of 32 or higher (currently 30), or a BMI of 27 or higher with at least two comorbidities (currently one). If the employee had a BMI of 32 or higher or a BMI of 27 or higher with at least two comorbidities when they were first approved for treatment, they will not lose coverage simply because the medication helped them lose weight or improved their health. This means they will continue to be covered even if their current BMI or number of comorbidities is lower as of January 1, 2027.
  • Employees will also be required to enroll and participate in a new, no-cost, virtual weight management program, offered through 9amHealth. The program requires four weigh ins per month and four app/web-based interactions per month with a health coach, peers, or nutrition tools.

MIT will maintain current GLP-1 coverage for employees who take these medications for type 2 diabetes.

Introducing Scripta

Prescription drug prices continue to climb. To help address these costs, MIT has engaged Scripta to help reduce out-of-pocket costs for plan members and for MIT.

MIT employees and their dependents, enrolled in an MIT health plan, are automatically eligible for this voluntary, no-cost program. Scripta is free to use starting January 1, 2027, but registration will be required.

Prior authorization (PA) protocols

Prior authorization (PA) protocols will be expanded to a wider set of prescription drugs (medications for dry eye, skin conditions, and erectile dysfunction). If you are using prescription drugs that are impacted by this change, you will receive notification from Express Scripts (ESI) with instructions on next steps.
