Competencies

Competencies are the key skills, behaviors, and qualities that enable employees to perform effectively in their roles and contribute to MIT's mission.

Why are competencies important?

Clear competencies help individual contributors and managers at MIT understand expectations for success at every level. They provide a common language for professional development, guide hiring and promotion decisions, and create alignment across the organization. By developing these competencies, we strengthen our teams, improve collaboration, and foster a culture of excellence and inclusion.

The MIT competencies

  • Individual Contributor Competencies — Nine core competencies that apply to all employees, from foundational technical and professional skills to leadership qualities like integrity, communication, and adaptability.
  • Managerial Competencies — Nine competencies specific to those leading teams and departments, with three levels of proficiency (Foundational, Intermediate, and Advanced) to reflect the progression from first-time manager to senior leadership.

Together, these frameworks provide a roadmap for professional growth and organizational success.
