SaveOnSP

Effective April 1, 2024, BCBS PPO+ Plan members will have access to SaveOnSP, a new copay assistance benefit for some specialty medications.

This benefit is designed to help plan members save money on some specialty medications by taking advantage of funds available through drug manufacturers.

How it Works

  • You can fill your specialty medication at the specialty pharmacy approved by your plan, which will be Accredo in most cases.
  • To ensure you pay as little as $0 for your included specialty medications, contact SaveOnSP at 1-800-683-1074.
  • Your participation in the benefit includes completing the manufacturer copay assistance enrollment process and allowing SaveOnSP to monitor your pharmacy account on your plan's behalf, which could reduce your cost to as little as $0.
  • Please note that manufacturer copay assistance may still be available to you without the plan or administrator’s support; however, if you do not consent to SaveOnSP monitoring your pharmacy account, any costs not covered by manufacturer copay assistance may be your responsibility.
  • Any payments made by you or the drug manufacturer for these specialty medications will not accumulate toward your out-of-pocket maximum. Additionally, copayments for these medications will continue even after you’ve met your plan’s out-of-pocket maximum.

This copay assistance benefit includes more than 320 drugs for the following therapy classes and conditions:

  • Asthma and allergy
  • Blood cell deficiency
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular
  • CNS
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Endocrine

FAQs

Who is SaveOnSP?

SaveOnSP works with plan sponsors to implement cost-reducing strategies on some of the most commonly used specialty medications. SaveOnSP supports plan members with a copay assistance benefit that drives down the cost of select specialty medications for the plan and its participants. Plan participants first enroll in the manufacturer's copay assistance program to reduce the cost share, and then consent to SaveOnSP monitoring their pharmacy account on behalf of the plan.

Why did I receive a letter from SaveOnSP?

SaveOnSP sent letters to members who are currently prescribed a specialty medication to notify them of the copay assistance benefit. SaveOnSP offers support with enrolling in the manufacturer copay assistance program, and will request consent to monitor your pharmacy account on the plan's behalf.

What is involved in the benefit enrollment process?

  • SaveOnSP will educate you on the plan’s copay assistance benefit and explain that you will see a higher coinsurance amount (on the member website, app, literature pack with their shipment, etc.), but upon enrollment in the manufacturer copay assistance program and with consent for SaveOnSP to monitor the pharmacy account, your final cost will be reduced to $0.
  • When SaveOnSP speaks to you, they will confirm if you are enrolled in the manufacturer copay assistance program. If you are already enrolled in copay assistance, the call with SaveOnSP will take just a few minutes as SaveOnSP will only need to obtain your consent to monitor the pharmacy account.
  • If you are not already enrolled in the manufacturer copay assistance program, the call may take a bit longer, as SaveOnSP will educate you on the specific manufacturer’s enrollment process, which varies by manufacturer, and will obtain consent to monitor your pharmacy account.
  • Should you choose not to participate in the copay assistance benefit, you can fill your medication without delay but you will be responsible for the 30% coinsurance.
  • Once manufacturer copay assistance enrollment is complete and you have consented to SaveOnSP monitoring your pharmacy account on the plan's behalf, the claim will bypass the pharmacy pause when you fill the drug. Additionally, SaveOnSP will send applicable billing information to the filling pharmacy for processing to ensure you have a reduced cost at all times.

What if I am new to the plan, or I am filling a prescription on the SaveOnSP drug list for the first time?

The Accredo (specialty pharmacy) system will pause the prescription and send a request to SaveOnSP to contact you before the initial claim is processed. Once in contact with you, SaveOnSP will explain the plan’s copay assistance benefit, assist with manufacturer copay assistance enrollment, and obtain consent to monitor your pharmacy account on an ongoing basis. Once you have enrolled in copay assistance and consented to have SaveOnSP monitor your pharmacy account, the prescription will be processed.

Why are member costs showing much higher than last year for certain specialty drugs?

The coinsurance amount associated with the medications included in the copay assistance benefit is 30%, which is likely an increase from what you may have previously been paying. Setting the coinsurance to this amount helps to reduce the plan’s ultimate responsibility for the medications. As long as you are enrolled in manufacturer copay assistance and have provided consent to monitoring the pharmacy account, the final cost will be $0, even if higher amounts appear on billing statements or elsewhere.

What if I do not want to enroll in manufacturer copay assistance or refuse to have my pharmacy account monitored?

You will miss out on an opportunity to lower your prescription cost and will be responsible for the 30% coinsurance. It is strongly recommended that all eligible plan participants enroll in manufacturer copay assistance and consent to having SaveOnSP monitor their pharmacy account to ensure the out-of-pocket cost is $0. SaveOnSP is here to support you with enrolling in the applicable manufacturer copay assistance program and to answer any questions you may have about the new benefit.

What if I do not qualify for the manufacturer copay assistance program?

If you do not qualify for copay assistance through the manufacturer, SaveOnSP will work with your pharmacy to ensure a $0 cost.

Do payments towards these medications apply to my prescription plan out-of-pocket expenses?

No, they do not apply to the out-of-pocket maximums under the plan.
