Temporary Parking Accommodations

MIT employees with a temporary disability may request a parking accommodation in order to park closer to their place of work on campus.

Temporary accommodation requests must be accompanied by a Medical Statement from your health care provider explaining why the accommodation is needed. (No medical statement is required for pregnancy-related requests.)

How it Works

In order to park on campus you must have a valid MIT Parking Account. Please note when requesting a temporary parking accommodation that your MIT parking fees will remain the same.

After the MIT Disabilities Services and Medical Leaves Office (DSMLO) receives both your request form (Touchstone required) and supporting documentation (see below), your request will be reviewed, and you will be notified of the decision. The duration of the temporary parking accommodation can be for a period of up to 6 weeks, with a possible extension. The requested lot cannot be guaranteed.

Once your temporary parking accommodation has been approved, your request will be conveyed to the MIT Parking and Transportation Department. A representative from MIT Parking and Transportation will grant you remote access to the temporary parking lot. The access will be embedded into your MIT ID.

Extension of accommodation

If after approval, you believe that you need an extension of time beyond your initial approved period, you must contact DSMLO before the lapse of the period. All requests for additional time are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. If you request an extension, you may be required to provide additional medical documentation.

If your disability is progressive or permanent, or if you believe that you will need a parking accommodation for greater than 6 weeks, you must apply for a state-issued handicap placard with your local RMV or DMV (if you are a Massachusetts resident, see this site). Please note that the process to obtain a state placard in Massachusetts can take up to 30 business days. An extension of the parking accommodation may not be granted if you do not apply to the DMV in a timely manner.

How to Submit a Request

  1. Fill out this short form (Touchstone required). You may wish to review the parking lots available to MIT employees before requesting a specific lot.
  2. If your temporary parking accommodation request is related to pregnancy, you do not need to submit a medical statement (we will confirm your leave details with your and/or our leave vendor WorkPartners).
  3. For all non-pregnancy related requests, download this Medical Statement form and give it to your healthcare provider. You or your healthcare provider should return the completed Medical Statement to DSMLO via secure email or FAX at (617) 253-1502. DSMLO cannot review requests until both the form and medical documentation have been received.
  4. Once your request has been approved, you will receive notification by email from a member of the DMSLO team.
