School of Engineering
Serving the Client
Award presented by
Provost Martin Schmidt

In the Serving the Client category, we honor individuals who have distinguished themselves—not just for their skill and ingenuity in meeting their clients’ needs—but in anticipating those needs.

Our first award recipient gives all her colleagues in the School of Engineering the distinct feeling that she is there just to support them. By all accounts, she combines extraordinary dedication, talent, generosity, and creativity.

Her name is Michelle Coyne, and she is the Director of Human Resources for the School of Engineering. Michelle closely partners with all of the School’s DLCs and programs to resolve complex employment-relations matters, and provide guidance on recruiting and organizational-change initiatives. She also mentors and educates the School’s Administrative Officers and HR staff on policies and procedures and state and federal laws.

Her job entails advising and training on issues such as job performance, hiring, professional development, leaves, compensation, and conflict resolution. Michelle doesn’t just excel in her role, she always provides an extra measure of support.

Those who nominated her for this award say that Michelle devises creative solutions to problems. She uses her excellent communication skills to help craft sensitive letters. As one of her coworkers said, “Even when we aren’t talking to Michelle, I always feel like, wherever she is, she is thinking about us and working on our behalf.”

In each situation, Michelle closes the loop and follows up about outcomes.

Now, more than ever, it’s nice to know your colleagues are working to support you. Michelle’s many nominators highlighted what a trustworthy and reliable resource she is for the many staff members in the School of Engineering.  Michelle, congratulations on your Excellence Award.
