Why are competencies important?
Clear competencies help individual contributors and managers at MIT understand expectations for success at every level. They provide a common language for professional development, guide hiring and promotion decisions, and create alignment across the organization. By developing these competencies, we strengthen our teams, improve collaboration, and foster a culture of excellence and inclusion.
The MIT competencies
- Individual Contributor Competencies — Nine core competencies that apply to all employees, from foundational technical and professional skills to leadership qualities like integrity, communication, and adaptability.
- Managerial Competencies — Nine competencies specific to those leading teams and departments, with three levels of proficiency (Foundational, Intermediate, and Advanced) to reflect the progression from first-time manager to senior leadership.
Together, these frameworks provide a roadmap for professional growth and organizational success.
