The next Serving the Client Award goes to a member of the MIT Police Department in the Special Services/Detective Unit. Officer Jennifer Ortiz has been praised by her colleagues as a positive, compassionate person with a gift for interacting with all members of the MIT community. Her letters of nomination recount an extremely sensitive assignment following the death of a student. When the student’s family arrived from Bogotá, Colombia, Jennifer was asked to step in and serve as translator. She accompanied the student’s family members to their many difficult appointments without hesitation and with a compassionate commitment that went well beyond her professional responsibilities. Jennifer even stayed with the family during their extended visit here in America, providing continual moral support. The MIT Police Department, the MIT community, and especially the student’s family were fortunate indeed to have Jennifer’s phenomenal support at such a time.
A well-respected member of the force, Jennifer Ortiz quickly gains the trust of everyone involved in a challenging situation. Her calm composure is one of the hallmarks of her success as an officer.
