Education Advising for Elementary, Middle, and High School

As a parent, you know the education your child gets today will shape their opportunities tomorrow. Yet the path to graduation is long, and there are so many choices to make. Now, you don’t have to do it alone.

K-12 School and Education Guidance

  • MIT’s Bright Horizons College Coach benefit provides benefits-eligible staff, faculty, and postdocs with school and education guidance – at no cost – from expert education advisors. These former primary and secondary school educators can help families:
    • Understand grades and testing
    • Interpret report cards and test score reports
    • Prepare for parent/teacher conferences
    • Research extracurricular and summer activities
    • Find in-person and online tutoring options
    • Plan for academic achievement through course selection

In addition, families can access live and recorded webinars, videos, and articles through the online Learning Center.

Log in to College Coach

  • Use of the College Coach® program is restricted to current benefits-eligible MIT staff, faculty, and postdocs.
  • You will need an MIT certificate or Kerberos username and password to access this program.

 MIT Employees & Postdocs

  • MIT’s Peace at Home Parenting Solutions benefit provides benefits-eligible staff, faculty, and postdocs with up to 60-minutes of free parent coaching per calendar year. Their expert education coaches can advise families on how to support and develop executive functioning skills, enhance social emotional learning, create positive routines that support success in school (including homework practices), and plan for school transitions.
  • School Finder provides guidance to Massachusetts families who have questions about public schools, career-technical schools, exam schools, charter schools, homeschooling, virtual schools, recovery schools, inter-district school choice, and navigating school systems.

Special Education Support

  • The MIT HR Center for WorkLife and WellBeing is hosting live webinars this spring, Executive Function Challenges in Teens: How They Impact Academics and How You Can Help
(February 28, 2024) and ADHD: 7 Steps to More Cooperation and Less Conflict (May 6, 2024)
  • MIT’s Peace at Home Parenting Solutions benefit provides benefits-eligible staff, faculty, and postdocs who need special education support with up to five 60-minute parent coaching sessions per calendar year. Their Special Education coordinator can help families understand the special education process, and identify helpful resources.
  • MIT’s MyLife Services benefit provides benefits-eligible staff, faculty, and postdocs with a free 30-minute consultation per fiscal year with a licensed Special Education administrator, who can answer questions about Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans, provide guidance on when to get children tested, and advise families on their specific needs.
  • The Federation for Children with Special Needs provides families with individual assistance, resources, referrals, and training. If additional support is needed, their Information Center provides referrals to parent consultants and advocates who can review and explain school records and evaluations, and/or attend an IEP meeting. Referrals can also be made to special education attorneys, if a more complex level of support is necessary.
