Bringing Out the Best
Award presented by
Ian Waitz, Dean of the School of Engineering

The next recipient in the Bringing out the Best category is well known for bringing out the best in everyone she interacts with—from colleagues to renowned digital age thinkers. Her name is Marie Lee and she is an Executive Acquisitions Editor at MIT Press. Marie has collaborated effectively with scores of distinguished—and sometimes demanding—authors and editors to publish works about computer science and linguistics. Works that are shaping these fields worldwide. She also has driven landmark collaborations with other publishing institutions, including a pending partnership with Tsinghua University Press in Beijing.

But Marie Lee’s impact is felt just as powerfully in the hallways and offices of the Press, where she has been a thoughtful and inspiring mentor. As a former assistant wrote, “Marie really took the initiative to address my future career path at the Press. My current position would not have been possible if Marie hadn’t provided me with the opportunity to begin acquiring books and developing projects for her list. To some extent, my gain was her loss, because every book I acquire for her is one less that she can count toward her own signing goals—a fact that she would never acknowledge.”

Because Marie brings out the best in everyone she works with in whatever capacity, we’re honoring her today with an Excellence Award for Bringing out the Best. Congratulations, Marie!
